The castle was built around 1550 by John Carswell, The Rector of Kilmartin and later Bishop of the Isles. He lived here before moving to his new residence at Carnasserie Castle (now ruined). Kilmartin Castle, a small late 16th century fortalice, is now roofless and in poor condition. It is of Z-plan consisting of a main block lying N-S with round towers at the NE and SW angles.

It is believed that Castle Stalker, much in its present form, was built by the then Lord of Lorn, Sir John Stewart, who had an illegitimate son in 1446, and it is Stef Burgon and Simon Hunt purchased Kilmartin Castle, Scotland in 2014. Stef, originally from Newcastle in the North of England and Simon, from Adelaide, Australia were living in Dubai working as a radio presenter and creative director respectively. This is their story of how they came to own, live in and work from a 16th century castle. In 2019 current owners, Stef and Simo spent seven months working with a skilled team of builders and architects on a full restoration of Kilmartin Castle.
